Salty Girl Seafood Announces Partnership with Wild Salmon Center

Salty Girl Seafood donated 1% of annual revenues to the non-profit Wild Salmon Center to help protect strongholds of wild salmon through their 1% For the Planet partnership.

Santa Barbara, California, August 11, 2016 – Salty Girl Seafood, a Santa Barbara-based seafood company, which supplies sustainable, traceable, ready-to-cook seafood to grocery stores – including Whole Foods Northern California region, Bristol Farms, and Lassens – teamed up with the non-profit organization Wild Salmon Center to be the recipient of their 1% for the Planet donation this year.

In 2015, Salty Girl established their financial commitment to environmental responsibility by joining thousands of businesses committed to donating 1% of annual sales to organizations creating positive environmental change. Through the 1% for the Planet network, businesses like Salty Girl Seafood connect with non-profit organizations making change; shoppers know that their dollars are truly making a difference when they choose products with the 1% for the Planet logo. Together, members of 1% for the Planet have contributed more than 100 million dollars to fund sustainability initiatives that protect the natural world.

“At the end of the day, the goal of Salty Girl Seafood is to ensure there are plenty of fish for generations to come. We chose to support the Wild Salmon Center because they’re truly out there taking action to drive positive change as the only group working to protect a network of wild salmon strongholds across the entire North Pacific,” said co-founder Laura Johnson. They’re also working on an issue near and dear to our hearts: fighting for the protection of Bristol Bay from the development of Pebble Mine.

The Wild Salmon Center, based in Portland, Oregon, is an international conservation organization working to protect wild salmon ecosystems across the North Pacific. Founded in 1992, the Wild Salmon Center and partners have successfully conserved eight million acres and ten thousand river miles of critical salmon habitat. “To permanently protect important salmon fisheries like Bristol Bay, we need the help of forward-thinking companies who understand that conservation is good for business,” said Kim Kosa, Development Manager at the Wild Salmon Center. “We're thrilled to team up with Salty Girl and work towards this shared vision of healthy and abundant wild salmon runs that can continue to benefit our children and grandchildren.”

The Salty Girl Seafood retail brand was created to simplify purchasing and preparing sustainable, traceable seafood. In 2015, the company won the Strongest Market Opportunity prize at the Fish 2.0 International Seafood Competition and in February 2016 their (wild Alaska) Coho Salmon with Lemon Pepper & Garlic was named as a finalist for a prestigious NEXTY Award. Whole Foods adds Salty Girl Seafood’s award-winning line of sustainable seafood to stores in Northern California

Salty Girl Seafood expanded into Whole Foods Northern California stores in early April

San Francisco, California, April 19, 2016 – The Santa Barbara-based seafood company, which supplies sustainable, traceable, ready-to-cook seafood to grocery stores across Southern California – including Bristol Farms, Clarks, and Lassens – now sells its products throughout 34 Whole Foods stores in the Northern California region.

“Moving our line into Whole Foods in this region is a great fit for our products,” said co-founder Norah Eddy. “Opportunities for the everyday consumer to purchase sustainable seafood that has accurate, easy-to-understand information about where and how it was caught are beginning to grow, but still difficult to find in your regular grocery store. We’re here to change that.” Salty Girl Seafood will bring all three products in their line to Whole Foods stores in the region - Black Cod with Sweet & Smoky Teriyaki, Coho Salmon with Lemon Pepper and Garlic, and Pacific Rockfish with Garlic Fresh Veggies. All of the items are sustainably sourced, traceable back to the fishermen or fishing community where it was caught, and seasoned with healthy, gluten-free recipes.

The Salty Girl Seafood retail brand launched in September 2015 to simplify purchasing and preparing sustainable, traceable seafood. In February, the brand was named as finalist for a prestigious NEXTY Award, an internationally recognized award given to companies with the most innovative natural products. “We are so excited to expand our reach in Northern California and grow our line into stores throughout the rest of the country in the coming year,” said Eddy.
