Our hearts are heavy with the devastation and destruction our community has endured from the fire and floods. Sending our love and prayers to our friends and neighbors in these incredibly difficult times, and to the emergency and rescue workers - and all of the helpers - working around the clock to bring people to safety. #montecito
Thank you for all of the love in 2017! ❤️🌊🙌 #2017bestnine #2017 #🐟
“I started out fishing as crew for my dad. When I was about 7 I got a student license and a couple traps of my own that I would fish off of my dad’s boat. By the time I was 14, I had a full commercial license and a little boat of my own.
.

One of the most attractive things about lobstering is the family aspect. Not only do I get to fish along side my dad and sister every day, but everyone around me has family history in the harbor and industry. This has given me a unique position to be not just a fisherman, but a stewardess of the sea. Having a territory as we do here, you can’t just go anywhere to fish. If you abuse your area, you’re hurting not just your own family, but your whole community. It’s really grounding and special.”
.
Day 12 of our “12 Days of Salty Girls” is 26 year old Sadie Samuels, a lobster fisherman out of Rockport Harbor in Maine who runs a boat with her sister, Molly. The pair have owned their boat since 2010, and like so many of our kindred Salty Girls, have lived their entire lives on, around, and captivated by the sea.

“My relationship with the sea is intrinsically tied to my relationship with my father. As my fishing career grows so does my relationship with him. Since the time I was small my summers have been filled with memories of salmon fishing. It’s a family tradition that gives me a strong sense of self and place. Salmon are the centerpiece my family and I have built our lives around.”
.
Day 11 of our 12 Days of Salty Girls is Hayley Hoover, a fisherman in Cordova Alaska who, like so many fishermen, has a deep appreciation for the environment and feels the innate responsibility to work to protect it's resources. As a Native Alaskan woman from a multi-generational fishing family, she not only runs her own gillnetter in Cordova, but has stepped up to the plate in an incredible number of other roles to ensure the sustainability of our natural resources for generations to come.

“I think of diving Hopkins Marine Station in Monterey where giant kelp shoots to the surface and seals glide by to say “hello”. Every rock teams with life from sponges and bryozoans, to crabs, sea stars and snails in the cracks shy rockfish hide while their more outgoing counterparts dart between blades of kelp.” Day 10 of our 12 Days of Salty Girls is Anna Neumann who combines her dive skills and passion for the ocean as a regional manager for @reefcheckfoundation, the largest statewide citizen-scientist monitoring program for California's marine protected areas and nearshore rocky reef ecosystems. .

“We grew up on a homestead on the shores of the North Pacific Ocean &  the Bering Sea, so we were hooked [on the sea] very young. Our lives revolved around the sea, whether we were digging for clams at low tide, taking a walk through the kelp, or fishing on the water with our family, so we’ve always depended upon it for our explorations, our livelihood, our community, and our mode of transportation.”
.
Heading into the weekend, Day 9 of our 12 Days of Salty Girls are sisters Emma Teal Laukitis & Claire Neaton (@aksalmonsisters). These inspiring ladies run one of our favorite online shops, a seafood and apparel business inspired by the ocean and their lifestyle as commercial fishermen. (Hint: you can still order from their shop in time for Christmas!).

"We are all EQUAL on the ocean and the ocean does not discriminate... The ocean can be welcoming and serene, unpredictable and exploding, poetic and playful, and also break and crush you. The ocean doesn't give a SHIT about your gender, how tough you think you are, where you come from, your college degree, family name, socioeconomic class, what God you worship, where you shop or the kind of car you drive. The ocean is a powerful teacher when you realize you are not in control; you get to know yourself pretty well - mind, body, heart, and soul when you are simply existing, adapting, and keeping afloat."
.
Day 8 of our 12 Days of Salty Girls is Corey Wheeler Forrest (@fishandforrest) - a mother of two, 3rd generation fisherman in Rhode Island, and a woman we’re honored to know (link in bio).

“What I love most about the ocean is how dynamic it is. No two days are exactly the same. When the sun is shining it looks like a million crystals are dancing on the water's surface and when the clouds are out it becomes this mysterious depth full of adventure and intrigue. I am also in awe of how the tides, winds and swells change the ocean - something you are particular in tune with when you surf...the ocean on a flat day versus a huge swell day is a completely different beast.”
.
Day 7 of our 12 Days of Salty Girls is Alelia Parenteau of @isurfschool and the Surf Like a Girl Foundation. She’s a surfer, mother, entrepreneur, and all around ocean lover who has made it her mission to spread the joy of surfing to women and girls of all ages. (link in bio!)

“In mid-June, Michael and I are in the busiest part of our fishing season. The days are getting so long in Alaska and we’re fishing around the clock for sockeye salmon. It’s eleven thirty at night and the sun is still glowing in the sky and the mountains are lit up. As tired as we are, I love this time of year and the rhythm we’ve settled into of working together out on the water and the daylight that seems to last forever.”
.

Day 6 of our 12 Days of Salty Girls is fisherman Nelly Hand of @driftersfish. Like so many of our Salty Girls, life on the ocean runs in her family. Nelly and her husband, Michael, belong to a generation of fishermen who know the power of a good story and are finding ways to share their story with salmon lovers around the country; bringing people together over good food and stories of wild places. (Link in bio)
