Lance Nacio is a long-standing White Gulf shrimp fishermen from Louisiana. He captains the F/V Anna Marie, named for his two daughters. In an industry that historically has had extremely high bycatch (up to 4 pounds of bycatch per pound of shrimp caught), Lance has gone above and beyond management regulations to install larger mesh nets and turtle excluders on his gear. Due to these investments, he is able to achieve less than 10% bycatch on his fishing trips– much less than traditional trawling methods. Lance regularly speaks about sustainable practices for shrimp fishing at events, like the SeaWeb Seafood Conference.
