Scientific Name:  SEBASTES GOODEI

How it was caught: BOTTOM TRAWL

Port of Landing: MORRO BAY, CA

Sustainability

Chilipepper rockfish caught via trawl on the West Coast is MSC certified and those caught by the California groundfish collective are considered a Best Choice by Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program. The California groundfish collective is a group of captains, community leaders and conservation experts working together to create healthier oceans, and better, more productive fisheries. While bottom trawling is sometimes associated with high rates of "bycatch" (the nets sweep up nearly everything in their path, including non-target species of fish, plants and other ocean habitat features), this fish was harvested by a fisherman who participates in long-term conservation projects that includes switching to new gear designs and protecting areas of critical habitat.
